Shumen

Madara — Lying 15 km east of Shumen, Madara is home to the Madara Rider or Madara Horseman, Bulgarian: Мадарски конник, a large rock relief depicting a horseman carved on a cliff, which likely dates back to 710 CE, and is in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Also nearby are Thracian tombs and the two of the ancient capitals of the Bulgarian Kingdoms, Pliska and Preslav.

Southwest of Shumen close to Kotel, there is a nice village, Medven, with old wooden houses, a nice little waterfall, and a good restaurant and hotel 30 leva for a double room.
