Prince George's County is best known as the wealthiest majority-black county in the U.S. It is home to the main campus of the University of Maryland, a big Six Flags amusement park, the Washington Redskins, and a major NASA facility. You will sometimes hear it abbreviated "P.G.", but the visitor is probably better off avoiding the term, which irritates a small number of county residents.
The county is very diverse, both racially and economically. Inside the Beltway, there is a pretty clear division between Northern PG County northeast of D.C. and Southern PG County southeast of D.C.. The former is significantly more densely populated and wealthy than the latter, which has much in common with the even poorer neighboring areas in southeastern D.C.. Outside the Beltway, areas like Laurel, Bowie and Upper Marlboro sometimes feel like they belong more in neighboring counties than in "P.G."
